John Lowther

Senior Associate Solicitor

My favourite thing about my job is developing a relationship with my clients where they feel empowered by the process, supported and helped in their efforts to get the justice and support they deserve.

Get to know John

I am an experienced solicitor (an APIL Accredited Senior Litigator) based in the North of England, specialising in medical negligence litigation.

I am the Vice President and President Elect of The North of England Medicolegal Society, joint Group Coordinator of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers North East Group and a Healthwatch Chair.

I have worked almost exclusively in medical negligence litigation since 2010. My journey in law started elsewhere and I qualified at a niche employment law firm acting in equal pay litigation being pursued against NHS Trusts and local councils.

On qualification, I moved to a role at a specialist medical negligence firm. I became a Director in the clinical negligence department and remained there for just short of 10 years. I moved to work in a serious injury department acting on behalf of private insurers in cases involving life changing injuries.

Subsequently, I joined a firm in Teesside as Partner and Head of the Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Department before moving to Slater and Gordon.

I am proud to be Slater and Gordon’s Team Leader in the Newcastle Office. We work with lots of people from across the North East and beyond who have serious concerns about the medical treatment they have received. We help get answers, identify errors and safety concerns – and most importantly help injured people get access to funding for the best rehabilitation, therapies and support available.

It’s a privilege to be able to do this work and we are fortunate to be backed by the national infrastructure at a leading full-service consumer law firm. We benefit from the knowledge of leading lawyers from around the country, the wisdom of our inhouse clinicians, and a media team that is second to none.

Unlike many other law firms, we are able to offer really specialist legal advice in education law, family law, employment law, wills and trusts, Court of Protection, and all manner of different areas of litigation – from industrial disease, workplace and military injuries to car finance claims.

We can also arrange for injured people to get guidance about their entitlement to welfare benefits, to speak with independent financial advisors and put them in touch with our incredible wide range of charity partners and other third sector organisations.

I have a particular interest in complicated litigation, where the impact on the patient has been particularly severe. My caseload includes investigations into life changing brain and spinal injuries, avoidable amputation and death.

My approach is to get to the heart of the issues and provide comprehensive, direct and clear advice in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

I am compassionate, supportive and particularly easy to talk to. I strive to ensure that my clients feel empowered by the legal process, in control of their claim and up-to-date with any developments in their case.

I am willing to go the extra mile and have travelled to meet with clients at their homes, in rehabilitative centres and in prison where necessary. I am more than willing to consider acting where other firms have discontinued their investigation and have taken on and won a number of such cases. I am fortunate to love my job and I work hard to achieve excellent results for those I represent.

  • Obtaining admissions and damages in cases, where other firms discontinued there investigations.
  • Helping obtain apologies and answers in cases involving death and serious injury.
