Family law in England and Wales covers a wide range of legal issues, many of which are deeply personal and can have long-term consequences. No two cases are alike, and the right approach will always depend on your specific circumstances, your priorities, and the needs of your family.
Our family solicitors have the depth of expertise to support you across the full range of family law matters:
Divorce: The divorce process involves significant decisions around finances and children that require careful legal guidance. Our leading divorce solicitors can help you navigate every stage with clarity and confidence.
Separation: If you and your partner have decided to separate but are not yet ready to divorce, or if you do not wish to divorce for personal or religious reasons, we can help you put a comprehensive separation agreement in place to provide a clear framework for how you'll manage finances, property, and arrangements for children going forward.
Child arrangements: This is often the most emotionally complex part of the process. Our experts will always keep your children's best interests at the heart, helping you reach fair, stable arrangements and, where necessary, representing you in family court proceedings.
Financial settlements: From property and savings to business assets and pensions, our Cambridge divorce lawyers will work to ensure you receive a fair settlement that protects your financial future.
Cohabitation disputes: Unmarried couples who separate face a very different legal landscape to married couples, meaning specialist legal advice can be crucial.
Civil partnership dissolution: If you're in a civil partnership and are looking to dissolve it, our civil partnership solicitors can guide you through the process and help you reach fair financial and child arrangements.
Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements: These agreements can provide valuable protection for both parties, giving clarity around how assets would be divided in the event of a relationship breakdown.

How much does it cost for family law advice in Cambridge?
We know that cost is one of the first concerns many people have when considering legal advice, and we don't think it should be a barrier to getting the help you need. Our approach to pricing is built around clarity and transparency so you’ll always know upfront what you'll pay.
We offer a range of funding options, including fixed-fee services. Our fixed-fee initial consultation costs £180 (including VAT) and gives you 45 minutes with a qualified family law specialist. This is an opportunity to discuss your situation in confidence, understand your legal position, and receive clear advice on your options, all without any obligation to proceed further or any risk of unexpected costs.
We also offer a fixed-fee divorce service, which is available for £600 (including VAT), plus the court fee. This is available for straightforward divorces without any financial disputes or child arrangements. Where financial or children’s matters also need to be resolved, your solicitor will provide a transparent cost estimate for any additional work required.
Should you choose to instruct us following your initial consultation, you'll be allocated a dedicated family law solicitor who will provide clear, detailed cost estimates from the outset. We'll discuss all funding options with you and work to find an approach that fits your circumstances.
Please note that we do not currently undertake work on a Legal Aid basis.
Matters were dealt with efficiently with a view to keeping costs to a realistic level and I am well satisfied with the final settlement she managed to achieve on my behalf.
J B (family and personal matters case)
The best solicitors to fight your corner! I struggled with a nasty unmarried couple dispute alone for over a year before biting the bullet and paying for proper legal support. I had one previous experience with a cheaper less well-known solicitor and I just felt completely let down and not a priority. But with Slater and Gordon, from start to finish, I felt supported 100% and valued.
B L (family and personal matters case)
For anyone needing help with family issues I could not recommend Slater and Gordon highly enough. I always had the feeling I had the best looking after my interests and they certainly didn't disappoint.
C I (family and personal matters case)

Frequently asked questions about family law in Cambridge
What can your family lawyers in Cambridge help me with?
Our family law solicitors for Cambridge can assist with the full range of family law matters, including divorce, separation, financial settlements, child arrangements, civil partnership dissolution, cohabitation disputes, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and protection orders. We also offer family mediation and divorce mediation services in Cambridge as constructive alternatives to court proceedings.
Do Slater and Gordon have specialist divorce solicitors?
Yes. Our team includes specialist divorce solicitors with extensive experience in all aspects of divorce law, including financial settlements, pension sharing, and child arrangements. We are ranked in the Legal 500, Lexcel accredited, regulated by the SRA, and members of Resolution, which reflects our commitment to expert, ethical, and constructive family law practice.
Can you help me if I am separating from my partner but not divorcing?
Yes, absolutely. Whether you're an unmarried couple separating, a married couple who doesn't wish to divorce at this stage, or in a civil partnership, we can help.
For unmarried couples, we can advise on your rights in relation to shared property and finances, which can be more complex than many people realise given the absence of "common law marriage" under English law. For married couples, we can help you put a formal separation agreement in place that clearly sets out arrangements for finances and children.
Many family law matters, including the majority of divorces and disputes over finances and children, can be resolved without the need for court proceedings. We'll always explore alternatives first, including negotiation and mediation. However, there are situations where court involvement is unavoidable or even beneficial, and in those cases, you can rely on our solicitors to represent you fully and professionally throughout the process.
How should I prepare for my initial consultation with your Cambridge family solicitors?
Bringing key information to your consultation will help you get the most from your appointment. The type of information we may need will depend on the nature of your case, but it can often include things like:
the date you started living together
your marriage or civil partnership certificate if you have it
the date you separated
full names and dates of birth for any children
a summary of your financial position, including property, mortgage, savings, income, pensions, and any outstanding debts
Your solicitor will be happy to guide you on anything else that might be relevant to your specific situation.
