In the case of most road traffic offences you’ll be dealt with via summons. However, on occasion, the police may ask you to attend for interview at a police station.
In cases like this, there may well be insufficient evidence to charge you with the offence at the time of the request to attend for interview, and you run the risk of voluntarily providing the information the police might need to charge you with, for example, Careless Driving.
That’s why it’s important to speak to an experienced motoring offence solicitor before attending a Police station interview. They can advise you on whether or not you’re legally required to attend, as well as talking you through what’s likely to happen when you get there.
If you’ve been asked to attend a police station with regard to a suspected motoring offence, call us before you attend on 0161 830 9632, or contact us and we’ll call you.
Why do I need representation at a police interview?
Police interviews can be pivotal to the success or failure of any case against you. Most people will tend to be as open and honest as possible with the police, even under interview conditions and especially when you don’t believe you did anything wrong.
However, it’s both wise and perfectly acceptable to answer ‘no comment’ to certain questions; this approach may mean the difference between all charges being dropped and being summonsed to appear in court.
You may be given access to a duty solicitor at the police station, but you should be aware that they will not necessarily have much expert knowledge of Road Traffic Law and procedures.
That’s why, if you’ve been asked to attend a police station with regard to a motoring offence, speak to an experienced motoring offences lawyer before you attend by calling 0161 830 9632, or contact us and we’ll call you.
